John Ruskin College has hundreds of courses to choose from. We will help you select the courses, making up your own individual programme of study to suit your level and aspirations. Courses can be studied at different levels, depending on how much you already know, what you can do and what your long term ambitions are.
A-Levels aren't the only way
We offer vocational qualifications such as the Level 3 Extended Diploma, which is equivalent to 3 A-Levels.
GCSEs
We offer GCSEs in Maths and English for learners who wish to retake the qualification(s) as additional subjects to their main qualification.
Introductory, First & National Diplomas
These qualifications allow you to specialise in a particular vocational area, such as Computing, Media or Motor Vehicle Technology. They form the majority of your programme so it is important that you are committed to the vocational area.
First Diplomas are equivalent to 5 GCSEs and enable you to progress into employment or to study at the higher level of the National Award or National Diploma.
The National Diploma is equivalent to 3 A-Levels and is a preferred route for many to University.
NVQs
Follow your choice of career and get a recognised qualification at the same time with a National Vocational Qualification. These are awarded at different levels when you demonstrate the knowledge and skills required for an occupation such as Motor Vehicle Technology, Construction or Hairdressing. You are continually assessed at work and in college. As your skills develop, you build up a number of units to a full NVQ at a particular level. The length of course can vary depending on the rate of your individual progress.
Foundation Diplomas
Similar to Access programmes, Foundation Diplomas aid entry into Higher Education. Our Foundation Diploma in Art & Design offers an intensive year of study, where students can build up their portfolio of artwork and knowledge required for HNC or HND courses.
Apprenticeships
Intermediate Apprenticeships (equivalent to five good GCSE passes)
Apprentices work towards their vocational qualifications, Functional Skills and a relevant technical certificate. These provide you with the skills you need for your chosen career and provides entry to an Advanced Apprenticeship.
Advanced Apprenticeships (equivalent to two A-Level passes)
Advanced apprentices work towards NVQ Level 3. To start this programme, you should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) including Maths, English and IT.
