Alumni Sport Level 3

Alumni Sport Level 3 - Vando

Former School(s): -

Vando moved to the UK from Portugal where he previously studied at Escola Basica Conde de Vilalva, Evora. He relocated to the UK in search of better career opportunities. Whilst a student at JRC, Vando studied a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport.

What led you to choosing this course?

I always had an interest in Sport for as long as I can remember. When I was five, I started with hip-hop, then did football, basketball, table tennis and badminton. My passion for sport just keeps growing - I want to try everything and find out as much as I can about each sport.

Why did you decide to study at JRC?

I had a brother at JRC who recommended it. When I started here, I did one year of ESOL and Functional Skills, before progressing on to Levels 2 and 3 of Sport.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I enjoyed the mix of theory and practical and find learning about the human body and psychology interesting and intriguing. Those who study Sport are generally competitive, and I loved that!  You learn never to give up – which you can apply to daily life too, such as when pursuing a new career path.

How are you finding the teaching/support?

The teachers were the best! They always supported me and were always available to help and give feedback.

Have you done any work experience during this course?

I did work experience at Selsdon Primary School, shadowing the Sports coach and supervising groups of children doing activities and tournaments. I loved working with children, sharing my love of sport, inspiring them and spotting talent – it was amazing!

Have you taken part in events/trips/competitions/exhibitions or had any speakers visit?

We had a speaker from a college specialising in football and coaching who gave advice on how to get into coaching, which was really useful.

There was also a Careers Advice Day at JRC where I applied for a part-time job with Munchkin Sport, a local sport company which introduces children to the world of sport.

What have you been up to since finishing your studies at JRC?

Since finishing at JRC, I have started working in the hospitality sector. Over the years I have progressed to a manager position and have recently started an Apprenticeship to gain even further qualifications. My goal is to progress higher in my hospitality career.

Would you recommend JRC to a future student. If so, why?

Yes!  It’s an amazing environment with a community spirit and lots of events.
