Art, Media & Design Level 3 - Che

Former School(s): Woodcote High School

Che has always been passionate about art and creating meaningful work. A large portion of his creative confidence came from his studies at JRC, and his tutor, Tracy. Recently, pieces of Che’s work were featured in the official journal of the British Balloon and Airships Club (BBAC). You can read about his creative process and how he found the experience here.

What led you to choosing this course?

I remember speaking to my mum about my options as I was really into illustration and wanted to explore the creative industry. She knew Tracy, the Creative Arts tutor at John Ruskin College, and told me to look at the courses available. From there I knew JRC was the place for me!

Why did you study at JRC?

I chose to study at JRC because of the freedom to experiment in my work. The facilities in the creative arts department are amazing, particularly the presentation and exhibition room and film studios. Even the classrooms are laid out perfectly, with social desks that let everyone feel together – it's very different from high school.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

The creative arts department has a very welcoming, tight-knit community at the College; our studios mean we have a nice, closed space upstairs where we can relax and get creative in as a group.

The projects here are also flexible and you can work on almost anything you’re interested in, at home or College. It’s a perfect College to feel challenged artistically.

How are you finding the teaching/support?

Tracy is an amazing tutor because she lets you experiment based on your interests, and she has never once doubted someone! She is the reason I felt encouraged enough to contact artists to potentially feature in their works. She helps you see a new perspective in your work which is so important as an artist.

Have you done any work experience during this course?

It might not be classified as work experience, but as part of our College work, we were briefed by the charity Off the Record for one of their mental health campaigns.  The project was called Smile and we designed posters and a storyboard for a video. My piece was about the importance of being truthful about mental health, which is what you want to see in this day and age in advertising.

Have you taken part in events/trips/competitions/exhibitions or had any speakers visit?

We visited a couple of Art Galleries and the Design Museum and also visited nearby art universities including UCA and UAL. I found all the trips really interesting and invaluable.

What are your future plans? University/Apprenticeship? Career aspirations?

I plan to go to university and am choosing between Lincoln and Northampton. I want to get into advertising as my work with Off The Record inspired me to find a career path that brings emotion out of people through art.

Would you recommend JRC to a future student. If so, why?

John Ruskin College is a great College for any artists looking for freedom, great facilities and a place to expand your interests. You can follow your own path academically and feel supported every step of the way!
