Young Voices at JRC
Date: 20 May 2020
Since January, our ESOL students have been working with arts organisation Kazzum, who engage with children and young people in unique and inclusive arts projects! The ‘Young Voices’ group has been run at JRC for the past five years, as part of their Pathways programme, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.
Through their weekly Friday morning sessions, the Entry Level 3 students have progressed significantly in their confidence and interpersonal skills, using art-based activities. This year, the students are receiving up to five AQA unit awards in:
- Introduction to Public Speaking
- Team Building
- Communication Skills
- Confidence Building
- Understanding Others Using Empathy and Honesty
“The sessions are fun, collaborative and encourage teamwork and peer to peer support. Our recent feedback session showed that 80% of students think the sessions have improved their confidence a lot and 90% report that the sessions have improved their English speaking skills.”
Lauren-Joy, Programme Coordinator
Since lockdown, the sessions have been adapted to Zoom, and the creative facilitators have created an interactive, fun and calming space where the young people can meet, play and find some connection at a time when many are feeling isolated.
Here's what one of our students said about the sessions:
"I am feeling more and more confident with my English speaking skills" - Mehak
Thank you to Kazzum for their fantastic work with our students, and we're looking forward to being able to run sessions at College again!
