Art & Design students visit Tate Modern
Date: 05 December 2022
Our Art & Design Level 3 Year 1 and Year 2 students recently attended The Tate Modern in London which is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the world. This includes paintings, sculptures, and more made by artists all over the world such as Pablo Picasso, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, and Jenny Holzer.
Art & Design tutors, Tracy Carrington and Andrew Stockwell explained:
“This visit to the Tate will help the students to experience at first hand innovative ideas, designs and concepts for visual communication by artist and designers around the world. The content of their course focuses on the development of fundamental practical and digital skills, whilst also researching historical, cultural, contemporary and contextual influences."
Shannon Tomkins a Year 2 student, commented:
“The structure of the Tate building was interesting to see and the art on show was very diverse. My favourite art installation piece was Babel by Cildo Meireles, a tower made from hundreds of second-hand radios all playing at the same time."

The visit to the Tate Modern is one of several field trips planned by John Ruskin College so that students can develop their breadth of study and critical understanding through placing artworks and designs in a wider context and by investigating different kinds of creative and conceptual work. They can explore a range of style and practices and it provides an opportunity to experience, understand and respond creatively to assignments and the world around them.
