Say hello to your 2024/25 Student Governor, Mickey!

Date: 12 December 2024

As a Student Governor, Mickey will have the opportunity to represent the Student Body at a strategic level, providing insights on important decisions, and helping drive positive change within the College.

When speaking with Mickey, here’s what he had to say:

Why did you want to be a Student Governor?
I received a notification on teams and an email about the available position and thought I would be a good fit. I applied wanting to provide support for the Student Body, as well as an advocate for the LGBT and disabled community, as I have ASD and am bisexual.

What have you liked most about the role? Has there been any highlights to date?
The biggest highlight so far, has been to witness the work I’m currently doing is directly helping the people that need it most. Over the last month, I’ve enjoyed being an advocate for all students and listening to opinions and being their voice.

As a lift user, I have helped introduce an arm in the door to help with accessibility, I received a progress report and the change is happening now.

Do you feel you are a role model for other students?
When I was in a one to one with a tutor, we were talking about how I could be perceived as a role model or mentor to other students, as I help bridge the gap between staff and students at John Ruskin College.

What has been your favourite College Event to date?
I’ve personally liked my course trip which was to Saatchi Gallery with my Creative Arts class. Regarding to events College wide, the Winter Fair was a great success and all proceeds raised were going to Great Ormand Street, which is really close to my heart. It was a good time for students to get into the festive spirit and to socialise and make new friends.

Don’t hesitate to talk to Mickey if you’d like to raise any points about life at College and ensure that the student voice is represented across John Ruskin College.
