JRC students gain insight into university life at St. Mary’s University
Date: 06 December 2024
With the UCAs deadline steadily approaching, JRC Sports Level 3 Year 2 students took a trip to St. Mary’s University in Twickenham to learn more about their progression opportunities. Alongside a tour of the sports and educational facilities, students were fortunate enough to gain access to a first year practical session.
The first activity was based on Biomechanics and how to assess the movement of athletes and how they can function optimally with support from a sport and exercise professional. Students thoroughly enjoyed taking part and testing each other’s movement capabilities, including Fundamental Movement Skills (locomotion, object control and stability skills), Movement Quality (stability, symmetry and mobility) and Embodied Awareness.
After the activity, students were encouraged to take a tour of their state-of-the-art testing labs, strength and conditioning gym and rehabilitation centre.
Finally, students took part in a physiology lab testing session where two volunteers from the group participated in a gradual intensity increasing cycle. The rest of the group members took vital data which can be used to devise intricate training programmes as a result of the physiology test.
Abbee Cole, Curriculum Coordinator commented: “Attending St. Mary’s University Taster session has been a great experience for our Sports students. They have gained a valuable understanding of some of the demands of university and what it is like as a student in Higher Education within the Sports field.”
