OSC Commemorates Armistice Day

OSC Commemorates Armistice Day

Date: 11 November 2022

This morning, Friday 11 November, at 11:00, students and staff from East Surrey College and John Ruskin College came together for the Annual Service of Remembrance in the Winter Garden and outside the front of the College.

At John Ruskin College, students from a wide range of courses including ESOL, Creative Arts and Life Skills put together a College display containing artwork and wreaths.

The ceremony was introduced by Lee McCarthy, Director of Learning for Technical & Vocational Studies. This was followed by a similar Remembrance speech which led to the two-minute silence introduced by Student Union Vice President Talha.

Towards the end of the ceremony, a recording of 'In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae was played.

At East Surrey College, Public Services Level 1 & 2 students began the ceremony by leading a parade into the Winter Garden. We are proud to mark the occasion with members of staff who have served or continue to serve in the Armed Forces.

Following an introductory speech by Jayne Dickinson, Chief Executive, Sadie, our Student Union Vice President led a Remembrance speech before the College kept two minutes of silence to pay their respects. During the two-minute silence, students from our Supported Learning and Caring Services courses scattered red petals from the first floor balcony, followed by The Last Post.

Nominated students from each department laid wreaths on behalf of the College community; whilst the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ was played in the Winter Garden.
