Competing at Nationwide Maths Challenge
Date: 26 April 2023
Students from John Ruskin College in Selsdon and East Surrey College in Redhill took part in the nationwide MEI Maths Competition Cluster Final 2023 at Goldsmiths University competing against 15 other institutes.
Over 25,000 students took part in the competition and 17 of our students made it to the regional final. During the final, students had to complete a Tarsia puzzle and a Kahoot quiz.
Students were competing within three categories:
- The Funkies (students who have a grade 1, or no prior qualification in Maths)
- The Ein2steins (students who have Grade 2 as their highest prior qualification)
- Go Forth (students who have Grade 3 as their highest prior qualification).
Richard Gulley, a Maths Lecturer commented: “It was a brilliant day for our students to thrive in the realm of Maths. Students worked exceptionally and gained confidence throughout the day. They were a true credit to our colleges!”
Anastasiia, ESOL Level 1 student added: “The competition was an experience I’ll never forget; it was so cool! As a team we had so much fun - we got to meet other students from other colleges, and develop our Maths and communication skills.”
A super Well Done to all students involved and thank you to the Maths tutors for arranging for them to take part in such an exciting challenge.
