Intergenerational Care Event Returns to JRC
Date: 02 October 2024
It’s been five years since the Intergenerational Care Event began and we’re making a tradition out of it!
On 2 October, for the fifth year in a row, John Ruskin College in partnership with the Manju Shahul-Hameed Foundation, welcomed local community elders for our annual Intergenerational Care Event as part of our Black History Month celebrations.
Visitors enjoyed a wide variety of treatments available at our training salon, the Atrium Salon. Guests were offered body massages, styling hair services, make-up application and mini manicures – all at the hands of our Body & Spa Therapy, Hair & Media Make-Up and Hair students.
This event creates an invaluable opportunity for people of different generations to come together, share their experiences, and learn from each other. Our students were able to hone their skills, refine their customer service abilities and develop their techniques, all while learning about the stories of their client.
Manju Shahul-Hameed, founder of the Manju Shahul-Hameed foundation, explained how much the event means to the community: ‘Raising awareness for Black History Month is so important and this event is going from strength to strength. Bringing different generations together is what makes today so special. Many of the elders don’t want to leave when the day is over!’
Emily and Poona
Poona visits the Atrium Salon regularly and often gets her hair cut and styled by our students. When asked about her favourite part of the experience, Poona admitted she enjoyed everything. She added, ‘The day was very good. This is my third time coming to the Intergenerational Care Event and I enjoyed it very much, as always.’
Emily is studying Hair and Media Make-Up and was participating in the Intergenerational Care Event for the first time; ‘I also enjoyed today, this was my first time working with the elderly and although I was initially nervous, I felt better once they told me that my work was good.’
Elise
The Salon was a big hit among the elderly guests who all thoroughly enjoyed their day and connecting with the younger generation. Elise said, ‘it has been a very good day and because of this, I feel like I would love to come in just to use the Salon.’
