Intergenerational Care Event 2023
Date: 18 October 2023
On the 18 of October, students from our Hair & Media Make Up and Body and Spa programs at John Ruskin College, came together for the fourth consecutive year to participate in the Intergenerational Care Event 2023. This heartwarming event, made possible through a partnership with the Manju Shahul-Hameed Foundation, continued its tradition of bridging the generation gap and building community bonds.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Lindsay Pamphilon, the Principal & CEO of Orbital South Colleges, and Natalie Watkins, Head of Department – Vocational & Technical. All that attended were informed of the significance of the event as part of Black History Month and the excellent opportunity it presented for students and guest to learn and be inspired.
As part of the day, students were paired with their guest and taken into the college's modern training salon, The Atrium, where they were treated to an array of pampering services, including manicures, facials, massages, haircuts, and makeup application. This experience not only allowed the students to hone their skills but also provided an opportunity to refine their customer service abilities and learn new techniques.
This year's event also involved the participation of students from Creative Arts & Media Courses, offering them a unique platform to develop their talents and contribute to the heartwarming initiative. The collaboration between these diverse educational programs is an example of the outstanding opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation at John Ruskin College.
The day was concluded with an informal Q&A session accompanied by some refreshments. This was an opportunity for students to engage with the guests and exchange stories. This was an invaluable experience for the students and an opportunity to develop character traits they will require as Hair and Beauty professionals.
The success of the Intergenerational Care Event 2023 would not have been possible without the support of the Manju Shahul-Hameed Foundation. Their dedication to promoting intergenerational harmony and community development is truly commendable.
One visitor added:
“Today has been inspiring. We have all really enjoyed today and it can be seen from all the smiles and laughter around. Today has empowered old people to be young again.”
