Hair & Media Make-Up Alumni Talk

Our past Hair & Media Make-Up Level 3 student Ashleigh, joined us at John Ruskin College to talk to our current students.

She gave an overview of her start at JRC and how the course helped her progress to professional work on the production of a television show and onto a university level course at East Surrey College.

Ashleigh is currently working on the set of a new television drama called 'Psyched' which is currently in the production phase.

Whilst on set, she works closely with the Head Make-Up Artist and alongside other professionals in a fast-paced environment where she must be well prepared, flexible and adaptable to the changing demands on set.

She commented on this new chapter in her career saying:
“I feel I was really well prepared for working in a professional environment by my tutor at JRC. The way we needed to conduct ourselves in the classroom was the same as we do on set, so I felt ready for the new challenge.”

In addition to working on a professional film set, Ashleigh is studying Theatrical, Media and Special Effects Make-Up Foundation Degree HND at East Surrey College. She explained that the course is very varied and can be challenging at times, but in a good way as you need to plan your time very well and be more independent.

She told our students: “I apply the skills that I learned on my Level 3 course at JRC to my university level course. If that’s what you want to do in the future, then you’re on the right course!”

We asked our current JRC students about how they felt about hearing from our former student. Hair & Media Make-Up Level 3 student Millie commented: “I want to take a similar path to Ashleigh and study a university level course at East Surrey College. It was really useful to hear her experience and let me know I’m on the right path for the things I want to do in the future.”
