OSC Celebrates Black History Month 2024
Date: 04 November 2024
Staff and students at John Ruskin College and East Surrey College came together last month to celebrate Black History Month focusing on this year’s theme of ‘Reclaiming Narratives’.
Sourced from BHM, the theme underscores a commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold stories and the full complexity of Black heritage. To read more about the theme, click here.
Throughout the month, both Colleges held various events relating to the theme including talks, presentations, and external visits. You can read more about JRC Intergenerational Care Event here. Both Colleges also put up creative displays highlighting the importance of Black History Month.
Students were also able to get involved in multiple creative opportunities, taking part in our Cultural Week, trying African and Caribbean snacks and food including Oxtail Stew and Jerk Chicken, watching creative films and making their own bakes.
As part of Cultural Week, staff and students were encouraged to attend College in their cultural clothes, whilst having the opportunity to learn about different heritages.
Jordan Johnson, Student Engagement Coordinator, said: “As a college group, we’re proud to be supporting these conversations and experiences, it’s important we continue to raise awareness and encourage all staff and students to reflect, learn and engage ensuring a safe and inclusive environment.”
Lindsay Pamphilon, CEO and Principal at Orbital South Colleges added: “Black History Month honours the contributions, culture and resilience of Black communities, past and present and within our College group, we are committed to championing diversity and inclusion at the core of our values. We are dedicated in ensuring that everyone in our community feels heard, represented, respected and empowered.”
